"Lawson Turnbull began as a small two-man business in Glasgow in the middle of the 19th Century. In 1876, John Turnbull came to Aberdeen and established his business of metal merchanting on the present Mealmarket Street site. He died in 1902. Lawson Turnbull were incorporated as a Limited Liability Company in 1903. In the same year a rival company - Turnbull Brothers - was established by the widow of the late John Turnbull. The two companies existed side by side until 1921, when Turnbull Brothers was acquired by Lawson Turnbull, thus establishing the latter company as the principal plumbers' merchants in the north of Scotland. In 1920 the firm moved into the field of electrical wholesaling. In its early years Lawson Turnbull maintained their own brass foundry, brass-finishing and chrome-plating departments as well as producing tin-plate for the canning industry. They held important contracts for Rolls Royce and the Aberdeen shipbuilders John Lewis & Sons Ltd. Upon being taken over by H.A.T. Group Ltd. their directors' minute books were transferred to the new parent company in Bristol." |
