Administrative HistoryThe Aberdeen New Gas Light Company was founded in 1843 in response to the high prices charged by the Aberdeen Gaslight Company, which had enjoyed an effective monopoly of the supply of gas in Aberdeen since its foundation in 1824. The resultant competition had the desired effect of forcing prices down, and the two companies amalgamated in September 1846 as the United Gas Light Company, at the Aberdeen New Gas Light Company's works in Cotton Street. This concern was eventually taken over by the Corporation in 1871.

Further records of the New Gas Light Company are held at the National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh, among the records of the Scottish Gas Board (reference GB1/123). The SRO also hold the records of the Gas Light Co. of Aberdeen, 1846-1871 (GB1/101) and Aberdeen Corporation Gas Department, 1883-1943 (GB1/102).
