Information on some schools which operated before the establishment of the school boards may be gleaned from the organisation which administered the school. In particular, information on schools managed by churches may be found in the records of kirk sessions, held in the National Archives of Scotland (formerly known as the Scottish Record Office), and further information on Aberdeen Grammar School before 1872 and the Town's English School may be found in the records of Aberdeen Town Council, held in the Town House branch of the City Archives.

In contrast, there are few records of the many private schools in operation in the nineteenth-century, beyond the advertisements in the local press. One surviving snapshot of the number and type of schools operating in Aberdeen are the 1833 Schools Returns held in the City Archives. These returns provide statistics on pupil numbers and information on the curriculum and teachers in the day schools, evening schools and Sabbath schools in Aberdeen in 1833. Contact the Town House branch of the City Archives for further details.
