Herdman, 9 St. Bernard's Crescent, Edinburgh, announcing the despatch of a picture to Macdonald by passenger train, even though it is not quite finished, delayed by the dark weather, with some notes on the details of the picture: 'The costume is the usual country dress in the South of Italy, but is fast going out of fashion. The fountain & background are from sketches in Rome', directions on care to be taken when opening the case, and asking for the picture back as soon as possible for finishing. 1868
