He was born on 3 December 1834 to Robert Niven, junior and his wife, Margaret Bodie tenant at Bruckhills;  he died on 27 March 1921 at Sunnyside of Folla, following a road accident involving a horse-drawn gig.  He left the estate of Meadaple in trust to his heirs.</dc:description>
