Administrative History | Organised by the local education authority and held at the Middle School, Aberdeen. Known as Mothercraft/Parentcraft. Started in 1941 by Miss Simpson teaching small groups of pupils in 8 schools in Aberdeen. No sex instruction was given. Joined in 1943 by Miss Littlejohn. Talks started on 'Growing Up'. In 1949 Miss Simpson left and Mrs Souter joined the staff. After seeing an exhibition in London girl/boy relationships were introduced. In 1960 a fifth member of staff joined and it became the Department of Mothercraft with Miss LIttlejohn as heaad. She retired in 1966. In 1967 the name changed from Mothercraft to Parentcraft. the first displays were mounted in Commerce Street School Buildings. Later the department was based at the Middle School. In 1967 Mrs Souter became the head of department and produced Parentcraft Log Books nos 1 and 2. She retired in 1977. Aberdeen was the only area in Scotland to have such a course for pupils. |
