Description | Report addressed to James Riddel: "Dear Sir, according to appointment we have had a view of the splendid signals for steamers, along with the Pilot Master and five Masters of London and Leith Steamers. We went off about a mile and the sun being then just setting. We could not distinguish the red ball from the black one, we were therefore unanimously of opinion that there should be three balls, all black, and with the approbation of the Harbour Trustees we beg to propose that one ball hoisted should be a signal for all steamers only to come in, two balls for the London Companys steamers only to come in, and three balls for the Leith Companys steamers to come to the Harbour. Would you have the goodness to submit this to the Harbour Trustees at their first meeting and oblige, dear Sir, yours truly, William Just & Robert Mitchell." |
