Description | Letter to the Harbour Trustees: "Gentlemen, as our three steamers are now to be laid up for the winter, I am directed by the Committee to apply to you for propert berths to lay them in out of the way of other shipping. The berths that you appoint for them will require to be made level, and (?) upright ports fixed in the face of the quay wall, to prevent their wing (?) from going on the top of the quay at high water. Three berths will be required, and I may mention that they cannot be laid above the bridge on account of the foul air from the harbour destroying the painting and gilding of our cabins, which are very valuable. I am directed by the Gentlemen of our Committee to say that they would feel greatly obliged by your taking this matter into your immediate consideration as our vessels will be laid up by Tuesday night next, and we have at present no safe berth to lay them in. I am respectfully, Gentlemen, your most obedient servant, for Aberdeen Leith & Clyde Shipping Co, Robert Mitchell." |
