Description | These sets of photographs were originally stored in 18 box files in the rear attic at Regent Quay. They were arranged by the block the subject depicts (this is indicated by the reference number marked on the back of the photograph in the format structure: xxxxx.[Block number].x ). The two numbers run sequentially and the latter number has been retained for the arrangement in this catalogue. The first number appears to have been used on some of the plan series too. A description of the photograph is generally given on the reverse of the photograph and this is given in quotation marks in the title.
In most instances a few photographs have apparently been misfiled and are not in the corresponding box for their block: the original order has been preserved (i.e. they have been kept with the box they were found in) and this is indicated in the item's reference number with a letter A (or E for block 19). Blocks 19 and 20 have further letter sub-divisions. Each box also contained miscellaneous photographs, which have been grouped in separate subseries with a letter M.
Broadly the blocks appear to correspond to: Block 1 North Pier Block 3 Shipping Block 4 Trinity Quay, North Pier Block 5 Blaikie’s Quay, Waterloo Quay Block 6 Jamieson’s Quay, Trinity Quay, Regent Quay Block 7 Bridges, including St Clement’s Bridge Block 8 Matthew’s Quay Block 9 Matthew’s Quay Deep Water Berth Block 10 Palmerston Quay, Pacific Wharf Block 11 Albert Quay Block 12 Albert Quay Block 13 Albert Quay and Pontoon Dock 2 Block 14 Mearns Quay Block 15,16, 17 Torry Yard Block 18 New South Breakwater Block 19 Sheds Block 20 Cranes Block 21 Quay Rails Block 22 Inspection of Harbour by Commissioners Block 23 Floating plant Block 24 Machines, Floating Plant and Tools, Miscellaneous (including grab and sheer poles)
Plans for Block 3 and Block 24 were found in other boxes (see AHB/11/2/1/A3 and AHB/11/2/12/A3, AHB/11/2/22/A24 and AHB/11/5/2). There are also additional "block photos" in the nine boxes of photographs found in the back attic at the Harbour Board (see AHB/11/3). These can be identified in the alternative reference field. One index to the images for blocks 19-24 survives (AHB/11/2/25). |
