Description | Petition of 20th March, 1775, requesting that the council appoints George & William Forbes as contractor to inspect and maintain the lead roofs of churches and Town House in Abrdeen and to grant them use of the "commodious vault" under the church and the tools kept therein to this purpose, in exchange for an annual payment of 40 shillings. Forbes does not seek a retainer fee from the council but only "the chance of the towns work". Much of the petition is taken up with warning the council members about a rival businessman who had been contacting members seeking to secure the work for himself. Forbes explains in some detail that the rivals misrepresent his own abilities and experience in the matter of lead work and plumbing. |
