Administrative HistoryThe Gallowgate Porthill School was transferred to the management of Aberdeen School Board in February 1875. The latter school was re-named Porthill School and was re-opened in April 1875. The John Knox Free Church Schools in Gerrard Street were administered by the Deacons Court of John Knox Free Church until their transfer to Aberdeen School Board in February 1874. That school was then re-named Gerrard Street Public School. On the re-opening of Porthill School in April 1875, the Gerrard Street School Boys Department transferred to Porthill School. Gerrard Street School then became a girls school until its closure in January 1877 when the pupils transferred to the newly-opened Causewayend School. Porthill School was amalgamated with St Margaret's Episcopal School on 30 June 1939 (see ED/AT5/20). Thereafter the Porthill School buildings were used to house the infant classes of the amalgamated school.
Records of the John Knox Free Church Girls School, 1850 to 1877, are included in the records of John Knox Church, Mounthooly, held in the Town House branch of the City Archives (reference CH2/1493/52).
