Administrative History | Middle Secondary School was situated on the Gallowgate. The Middle School was opened by Aberdeen School Board on 19 November 1877 with 587 pupils on the roll. A complete renovation of the school took place in 1890 providing additional classrooms and the school roll was raised to 1000. A block containing a swimming pool, gymnasium, manual instruction room, cookery room and laundry rooms was approved in 1906, and a housewifery flat was opened in 1910. The school became an Intermediate School in August 1924 for pupils aged 12 to 14 years only. A further reconstruction took place in 1958, providing 3 new science rooms, a technical hut and a new gymnasium with spray baths. The school was re-named twice: from 1939 to 1954 it was known as Middle Junior Secondary School; thereafter the school was called Middle Secondary School. The school was amalgamated with Frederick Street Secondary School in August 1969 and the pupils were transferred to the Frederick Street building. For records of the Middle - Frederick Street School from 1969 to 1974, see Frederick Street School (reference AT5/2). |
